Types of microdisplays for projectors

Microdisplays for projectors are categorized into two types: liquid crystal microdisplays and other microdisplays. Liquid crystal microdisplays have two types, which are the reflective type and the transmissive type.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation has two types of liquid crystal devices: the reflective type SXRD™ and the transmissive type BrightEra™.

Sony’s Reflective Liquid Crystal Display Device SXRD™ (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display)

The SXRD utilizes Sony’s original fine pixel pitch technology, pixel flattening technology and inorganic alignment technology to achieve high reflectivity and high contrast ratio performance in a compact 0.37-type size.

  • High resolution: WXGA to Full HD
  • High contrast ratio: Normally black mode
  • High light fastness resistance: Uses inorganic alignment film

Sony’s Transmissive type Liquid Crystal Display Device BrightEra™ (HTPS: High Temperature p-Si TFT LCD)

The BrightEra utilizes Sony’s original fine fabrication technologies to achieve a high aperture ratio and high light efficiency. Implementation of inorganic alignment film greatly enhances light fastness performance and achieves high reliability.

  • Supports high brightness: High light efficiency
  • High contrast ratio: Normally black mode
  • High light fastness : Uses inorganic alignment film

Major types of projector optical systems using liquid crystal microdisplays

  • Optical system using single reflective LC microdisplay

    Field Sequential Technique: the three primary colors (RGB) images are projected time-sequentially onto the screen.
